Every 29th May, WGO celebrates World Digestive Health Day and initiates a worldwide public health campaign through its national societies and 50,000 members. For 2009, WGO will focus the world’s attention upon Irritable Bowel Syndrome, a truly global problem affecting millions of individuals (ca. 1 in 10) worldwide and exerting a significant influence on the quality of life both for the many reported and unreported (ca. 5 in 10) cases.

Iranian Association of Gastroenterology and Hepatology selebrate World Digestive Health Week from 21 up to 29 May, 2009 (31 Ordibehesht - 8 Khordad). We have arranged some seminars for physicians, some lectures for peoples, some programs in Radio and TV and some articles in newspapers in the Tehran, Qom, Mashhad, IsfahanKerman, GuilanSari, Golestan, TabrizAhvaz.

It is now recognized that irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a truly global problem reportedly affecting millions of individuals (ca. 1 in 10) worldwide and exerting a significant influence on the quality of life both for the many reported and unreported (ca. 5 in 10) cases. Yet, despite volumes of research highlighting the prevalence and impact of IBS worldwide, IBS remains poorly understood by the medical community and the general public alike.

WGO recognises therefore, that there exists a very significant "knowledge gap" with regard to all aspects of IBS and there is a real unmet need to bring the very latest information on IBS to medical practitioners, other health care workers and the general public. For this reason, WGO, in partnership with industry sponsors, focused the attention of the global gastroenterology community on May 29, 2009 and throughout 2009 on IBS.

The response from both national societies and industry partners to World Digestive Health Day 2009 surpassed all expectations. A showcase of the World Digestive Health Day 2009 Success Stories has now been published. WGO invites everyone to visit the updated events calendar and explore the spectacular success of World Digestive Health Day 2009.
